Cathy N. Davidson, in an article now available in the Spring 2019 issue of AAC&U’s Liberal Education, writes: “The past decade has seen a concerted effort by pundits and experts at the nation’s think tanks to say both that higher education is no longer worth the soaring tuition costs and that the public’s confidence in higher education is falling. Yet the supposedly negative view of higher education is not borne out by the statistics. The simple statistical fact is that, if people can afford it, they send their children to college. Indeed, there is an almost perfect correlation between wealth and college attendance. The more money you have, the more likely you are to send your offspring to college. More than 92 percent of those in the upper 5 percent of incomes in America send their children to college.”
